Apoquel (oclacitinib) is a medication used to treat and manage itchiness associated with allergies in dogs. The medication belongs to a class of drugs called Janus Kinase (JAK) inhibitors. It works by controlling the immune system’s response to itchiness and inflammation.

Uses and Benefits

Apoquel is used to treat itchiness and inflammation caused by a wide range of conditions. These include atopic dermatitis, flea allergy dermatitis, and food allergies. The medication works rapidly, and most animals will experience relief from itchiness and inflammation within 4-24 hours. Apoquel is administered in tablet form and is suitable for short and long-term use.

Dosage

Recommended dosages of Apoquel will vary, depending on factors such as your pet’s body weight and the severity of their condition. Always administer Apoquel as prescribed, and complete the course of medication unless otherwise instructed by your veterinarian.

If you miss a dose, administer it as soon as you remember. However, please disregard the missed dose if it’s close to the next dose. Never give your pet a double dose of Apoquel, as this can be detrimental to their health. If you suspect your pet has had an overdose, contact your veterinarian immediately. Signs of Apoquel toxicity include bloody diarrhea, skin infections, and allergic reactions.

Potential Side Effects

Although Apoquel is generally safe and effective when given as instructed by your veterinarian, the medication may cause side effects in some animals. Please seek immediate veterinary care if your pet displays any of the following symptoms.

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Decreased appetite
  • Lethargy
  • Skin infections

Precautions

Before giving Apoquel, please inform your veterinarian if your pet has underlying health issues or allergies to certain medications. Apoquel may not be suitable for pregnant or lactating animals, or those with underlying health conditions such as liver or kidney disease. In addition, the medication should not be given to dogs under 12 months of age.

Drug Interactions

No specific drug interactions have been reported with Apoquel, and the medication may be used with other treatments such as antibiotics, NSAIDs, and allergy medications. However, before giving Apoquel, it is important to inform your veterinarian if your pet is taking other medications or supplements
