Enrofloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in cats and dogs. It belongs to a class of drugs called fluoroquinolones and is commonly known by the brand name Baytril. Enrofloxacin kills bacteria by inhibiting bacterial DNA synthesis.

Uses and Benefits

Enrofloxacin is used to treat a wide variety of infections. These include urinary tract infections, skin infections, respiratory infections, and bacterial infections that result from wounds. The medication is easy to administer and is usually given in tablet form. However, in some cases, your veterinarian may administer enrofloxacin intramuscularly or intravenously.

Dosage

Recommended dosages of Enrofloxacin will vary, depending on factors such as your pet’s body weight and the severity of their infection. Always administer the medication as instructed by your veterinarian. It is also important to complete the entire course of treatment to prevent reinfection.

If you miss a dose, administer it as soon as you remember. However, please disregard the missed dose if it’s close to the next dose. Never give your pet a double dose of Enrofloxacin, as this can be detrimental to their health. If you suspect your pet has had an overdose, contact your veterinarian immediately. Signs of Enrofloxacin toxicity include vomiting, diarrhea, and allergic reactions.

Potential Side Effects

Although Enrofloxacin is generally well tolerated, it may cause side effects in some animals. Please visit your veterinarian immediately if your pet displays any of the following symptoms.

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Lethargy
  • Allergic reactions
  • Seizures
  • Ataxia (loss of balance and coordination)

Precautions

Before giving Enrofloxacin, please inform your veterinarian if your pet has underlying health issues or allergies to certain medications. Enrofloxacin may not be suitable for pets with conditions such as liver or kidney disease. It should also not be used in pregnant or lactating animals. In addition, the medication should not be given to animals under one year of age.

Drug Interactions

Some medications and supplements may interact with Enrofloxacin. These include penicillin, antacids, and NSAIDs such as Flunixin. Before giving Enrofloxacin, inform your veterinarian if your pet is taking other medications or supplements.
