Ketoconazole is an antifungal medication used to treat fungal infections in cats and dogs. It is also used to treat hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s disease). The medication is commonly known by the brand name Nizoral. It works by inhibiting the growth of fungal cell walls.

Uses and Benefits

Ketoconazole is used to treat a variety of internal and external fungal infections, including infections of the respiratory system, skin, and bone. It is effective against yeast and fungal organisms and is particularly useful for treating serious infections. The medication is usually given in tablet form, although it is also available as a topical or oral solution.

Dosage

Recommended dosages of Ketoconazole will vary, depending on factors such as your pet’s body weight and the severity of their condition. Always administer Ketoconazole as prescribed, and complete the course of medication unless otherwise instructed by your veterinarian.

If you miss a dose, administer it as soon as you remember. However, please disregard the missed dose if it’s close to the next dose. Never give your pet a double dose of Ketoconazole, as this can be detrimental to their health. If you suspect your pet has had an overdose, contact your veterinarian immediately. Signs of Ketoconazole toxicity include extreme drowsiness, yellowing of the skin, nausea, and vomiting.

Although Ketoconazole is generally well tolerated, the medication may cause side effects in some animals. Please seek immediate veterinary care if your pet displays any of the following symptoms.

  • Nausea

Before giving Ketoconazole, please inform your veterinarian if your pet has underlying health issues or allergies to certain medications. Ketoconazole should not be given to pregnant or lactating animals. It may also be unsuitable for animals with underlying health conditions such as liver disease.

Drug Interactions

Some medications and supplements may interact with Ketoconazole. These include antacids, cyclosporine, and corticosteroids. Before giving Ketoconazole, inform your veterinarian if your pet is taking other medications or supplements.
