Metronidazole is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal medication used to treat diarrhea, inflammation of the large intestine, and various types of infections in cats and dogs. It is commonly known by the brand name Flagyl. The medication works by stopping the growth of certain microorganisms, although the exact mechanism of action is not fully understood.
Uses and Benefits
Metronidazole is used to treat a wide variety of infections. These include anaerobic bacterial infections and protozoal infections such as giardia and trichomonas. Metronidazole may also be prescribed to treat periodontal disease and central nervous system infections since it is able to penetrate bone and the blood-brain barrier. In addition, it can effectively relieve inflammation of the intestinal tract caused by conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The medication is easy to administer and is available in liquid or tablet form.
Dosage
Recommended dosages of Metronidazole will vary, depending on factors such as your pet’s body weight and the severity of their infection. Always administer the medication as instructed by your veterinarian. It is also important to complete the entire course of treatment to prevent reinfection.
If you miss a dose, administer it as soon as you remember. However, please disregard the missed dose if it’s close to the next dose. Never give your pet a double dose of Metronidazole, as this can be detrimental to their health. If you suspect your pet has had an overdose, contact your veterinarian immediately. Signs of Metronidazole toxicity include nausea, vomiting, seizures, and ataxia (loss of balance and coordination).
Potential Side Effects
Although Metronidazole is generally well tolerated, it may cause side effects in some animals. Please visit your veterinarian immediately if your pet displays any of the following symptoms.
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Excessive salivation
- Allergic reactions
- Loss of appetite
- Tremors
- Seizures
- Ataxia (loss of balance and coordination)
Precautions
Before giving Metronidazole, please inform your veterinarian if your pet has underlying health issues or allergies to certain medications. Metronidazole may not be suitable for pets with conditions such as liver or kidney disease. It should also not be used in pregnant or lactating animals.
Drug Interactions
Some medications and supplements may interact with Metronidazole. These include phenobarbital and anticoagulants such as Warfarin. Before giving Metronidazole, inform your veterinarian if your pet is taking other medications or supplements.
