Simplicef (cefpodoxime proxetil) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. It works by suppressing the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria and protozoa. Simplicefis FDA-approved for use in dogs. It may also be used to treat cats under the guidance of your veterinarian.

Uses and Benefits

Simplicef is used to treat skin infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria such as Staphylococcus intermedius, Proteus mirabilis, Pasteurella multocida, and E. coli. It can also be used to effectively treat a wide range of other bacterial infections, including pneumonia, bladder infections, and ear infections. Simplicef is easy to administer and resolves infections rapidly. It also has a long half-life, allowing once-a-day dosing.

Dosage

Recommended dosages of Simplicef will vary, depending on factors such as your pet’s body weight and the severity of their infection. Always administer the medication as instructed by your veterinarian. It is also important to complete the entire course of treatment to prevent reinfection.

If you miss a dose, administer it as soon as you remember. However, please disregard the missed dose if it’s close to the next dose. Never give your pet a double dose of Simplicef, as this can be detrimental to their health. If you suspect your pet has had an overdose, contact your veterinarian immediately. Signs of Simplicef toxicity include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps.

Potential Side Effects

Although Simplicef is generally well tolerated, it may cause side effects in some animals. Please visit your veterinarian immediately if your pet displays any of the following symptoms.

Precautions

Drug Interactions

Some medications and supplements may interact with Simplicef. These include other antibiotics and anticoagulants such as Heparin or Warfarin. Before giving Simplicef, inform your veterinarian if your pet is taking other medications or supplements.
