Dog aggression is one of the more common issues dog owner’s face. An aggressive dog has the potential to become very dangerous. Dog aggression is usually a negative effect of built up frustration and lack of exercise. The most important thing to do is to determine where your dog’s aggression is stemming from and then take measures to relieve their frustrations.
Here are some steps to aid you in calming your aggressive dog to create a safe environment for everyone your dog may come in contact with.
Establish a leadership role
. Never forget that you are the owner of your pet, and that your pet does not own you. This can be the case more often than not. We love our pets and want them to be happy, but you must establish your leadership role in order to gain the respect of your pup. If your pet understands that you are the boss, they will be less likely to act out and take advantage of you.
Create boundaries
. Designate certain areas of your home where your dog will be allowed, as well as areas that are off limits to them, for example, your couch or bed. If the areas you choose have not been off limits for your pet previously, it may be hard to adjust at first. Often, the family has a harder time adjusting and sticking to the rules than your dog, which will add to your role as the leader.
Implement punishment for aggressive behavior
Letting aggressive behavior slide can be one of the biggest mistakes. If your dog knows that he can act aggressively and get away with it, the more likely he will act out regularly. Choose a punishment that is most suitable for your dog and for your family. Using a crate as a “time-out” area is always an easy and effective option. Make sure that you take action immediately after the behavior takes place so that your dog will understand why he or she is being punished.
Give rewards for good behavior.
Positive reinforcement goes a long way, so make sure you are rewarding good behavior. Whether you reward your pup with a tasty treat or enthusiastic praise, make sure you are clear about what you are rewarding.
The best thing you can practice is to stay positive
persistent and understand that changes will not occur overnight. Determine the ideal behavior for your dog, and work towards it a little bit at a time. Give our staff at Lazy Paw a call if you have any further questions. And always remember that you are the leader.
