How Our Veterinarians Diagnose Diseases and Injuries

When your pet isn’t feeling their best, it can be stressful for both of you. You’re worried. They’re uncomfortable. And getting the right answers quickly is important.

At LazyPaw Animal Hospitals, diagnosing diseases and injuries isn’t just about running tests or checking boxes. It’s about listening to you, understanding your pet, and working together to get the answers you both need.

Here’s how we do it.

Step 1: It Starts With a Conversation

You know your pet better than anyone. That’s why our diagnosis process always starts with a conversation.

Whether you’ve noticed your dog has stopped eating as much as they used to, or that your cat seems to be hiding for most of the day, these changes could be important clues. And because you know your pet best, hearing your observations helps us figure out where to start. No concern is ever too small!

Step 2: Conducting a Full Physical Exam

After the initial conversation, we perform a full physical examination. During this exam, we assess your pet’s state of health by:

  • Listening to their heart and lungs with a stethoscope
  • Gently pressing on their belly to check their abdominal organs
  • Move their leg joints to check for signs of pain, swelling, or instability
  • Use a light to examine their eyes, ears, mouth, and skin

Sometimes the symptoms we find during the physical exam give us enough information to make a diagnosis. Other times, we might need to run some tests to get a clearer picture.

Step 3: Diagnostic Testing (When Needed)

When additional information is required, we might recommend diagnostic tests such as:

  • Bloodwork to evaluate organ function, detect infections, and check blood sugar or electrolyte levels
  • X-rays to identify fractures, lung conditions, or abdominal concerns
  • Ultrasound imaging for a detailed view of internal organs
  • Fecal analysis and urine testing to uncover parasites, urinary tract infections, or internal diseases

These tests allow us to diagnose problems we can’t see from the outside, and help us give your pet the most accurate and timely care.

Step 4: Creating a Personalized Treatment Plan

At LazyPaw, we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all veterinary care. Your pet’s treatment plan will be tailored to their history, their lifestyle, and even their personality.

Once we have gathered all the necessary information, we’ll work closely with you to develop a treatment plan that meets your pet’s specific needs.

Whether the solution involves medication, surgery, or supportive care, our team is committed to helping your pet feel their best as quickly as possible.

Preventive Care and Screening for Diseases

While diagnosing illnesses in pets is a critical part of our practice, preventive care plays an equally important role.

Regular wellness exams and early screening tests help us detect potential health issues before they can get worse. Investing in preventive care like vaccinations and dental cleanings can give your pet a longer, healthier life.
