Whether you’ve just adopted a new puppy or kitten or you’ve already been visiting the vet for years, every veterinary clinic is different. When you’re looking for a new vet, it’s good to know what happens during an appointment. Knowing what to expect—and what to bring—can make the experience less stressful for your pet.
Here’s What Happens at a Veterinary Appointment
Before You Arrive
At LazyPaw Animal Hospitals, we want your visit to feel calm and comfortable, and a little preparation can really make a difference. To help us take better care of your pet, here’s what you should bring to your first appointment:
- Medical records (especially if you’re transferring from another vet or you’re new to the area)
- A list of any medications or supplements your pet is taking
- Stool or urine samples (but ONLY if requested)
- A list of questions or concerns (jotting them down ahead of time can help you remember everything you want to ask)
- A favorite toy or blanket (familiar smells can help calm your pet)
- A secure carrier or leash (even the calmest pets can get nervous in a new environment)
If you’re not sure whether or not something is important, bring it with you anyway. We’re happy to help you sort through the details!
A Warm Welcome and Intake
When you arrive at our Frisco vet clinic, our front desk team will greet you and get you checked in. If this is your first visit, we’ll go over your pet’s health history and any concerns you mentioned during scheduling.
We know that pets don’t love waiting rooms, so we do our best to get you settled in an exam room quickly.
During a Veterinary Exam
During your pet’s exam, we focus on more than what’s immediately obvious. Our veterinarians perform a full nose-to-tail checkup to look for any early signs of illness and ensure that your pet’s health is on track.
To help your pet feel more at ease, most of our exams are performed outside of the room, away from pet parents. This prevents your pet from associating you with “bad” things like vaccines or other treatments. It’s all about reducing stress for you both.
Here’s what usually happens during a routine veterinary exam:
- Listening to the heart and lungs for murmurs, irregular rhythms, or respiratory concerns
- Checking eyes, ears, teeth, and gums for signs of infection, inflammation, or dental disease
- Feeling the abdomen to assess internal organs and check for pain or masses
- Inspecting the skin and coat for rashes, lumps, fleas, or other issues
- Evaluating joints and muscles for mobility, stiffness, or discomfort
- Taking your pet’s weight to track gains and losses that might affect their health
Once your pet is back with you, we’ll go over everything we saw during the exam and answer any questions we didn’t get to before they went back.
Vaccinations, Testing, or Diagnostics (If Needed)
If your pet is due for vaccinations, bloodwork, or other tests, we’ll go over our basic recommendations and explain why they’re important. We tailor all our recommendations to your pet’s breed, age, lifestyle, and medical history.
Whether it’s a heartworm test, parasite screening, or senior blood panel, our goal is to keep your pet healthy for the long term. Diagnostic services like these help us detect health problems in their early stages, before they become more serious or harder to treat.
Estimates will always be provided for any treatment or diagnostic service before it’s performed, so you will never be caught off guard.
Personalized Care Plan
At the end of the visit, we’ll talk about what happens next. If your pet is healthy, then we’ll advise you on when to schedule their next appointment. Based on our discussions with you, we might make recommendations for behavior training or better nutrition. And if your pet had any treatments or got a vaccination, we’ll give you some home care instructions to follow.
If you ever feel unsure about any of our recommendations, just ask! We’ll make sure you leave feeling confident about your pet’s care plan.
Before You Leave
On your way out, our front desk staff will go over your appointment details. Payment will be taken, or a payment plan will be arranged. We accept CareCredit financing for added flexibility if you need it.
Our goal is to make sure you leave with clarity. Not just about your pet’s health, but also about what you’re paying for and why.
