Urgent Pet Care: What to Do If Your Pet Needs Help Right Away

If you’ve ever been through a pet emergency, you know how quickly panic can set in. Maybe your dog starts choking on a treat, or your cat can’t seem to catch her breath. In those moments, it’s hard to think straight. That’s why it helps to know what to do before an emergency happens.

Being prepared doesn’t only keep you calm, it helps your pet stay calm, too. And when every second counts, being able to stay calm and take action can make all the difference.

How to Recognize a Pet Emergency

Some situations simply can’t wait. If you notice any of these red flags, don’t hesitate—get your pet to a vet immediately or head to the nearest emergency clinic.

Pet emergency symptoms include:

  • Choking or difficulty breathing
  • Heavy bleeding or deep wounds
  • Sudden collapse or unresponsiveness
  • Seizures
  • Persistent vomiting or diarrhea
  • A hard or swollen belly
  • Trouble walking or standing
  • Ingestion of a toxin or foreign object

And if you’re ever unsure, just call ahead. Based on your pet’s symptoms, your vet can tell you whether to monitor them at home, come in immediately, or head to an emergency pet hospital.

What to Do in a Pet Emergency

When every minute counts, it’s easy to forget the little things. It’s a good idea to prepare a small emergency bag and keep it in an easy-to-grab spot so you’re not scrambling in the midst of the emergency.

Then take a breath. Slow down. And follow these steps:

  • Stay calm. Your pet can sense your stress, and staying calm helps them relax and stay safe.
  • Call ahead. If it’s during regular business hours, call your vet and let them know you’re on your way so they can be ready.
  • Grab the essentials. Bring any medications your pet takes and samples of anything your pet might have ingested.
  • Keep them safe in the car. Small pets should go in a carrier. Larger dogs do best on a leash or wrapped in a blanket to prevent further injury.
