Clindamycin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in cats and dogs. It is commonly known by the brand names Antirobeand Cleocin. The medication works by halting bacterial growth. It also kills bacteria by preventing them from creating the proteins they need to survive.

Uses and Benefits

Clindamycin is used to treat a wide range of infections. These include soft tissue infections, dental infections, bone infections, and respiratory infections such as pneumonia. It is also effective at treating toxoplasmosis and other protozoal infections. The medication is easy to administer and is available in liquid or tablet form.

Dosage

Recommended dosages of Clindamycin will vary, depending on factors such as your pet’s body weight and the severity of their infection. Always administer the medication as instructed by your veterinarian. It is also important to complete the entire course of treatment to prevent reinfection.

If you miss a dose, administer it as soon as you remember. However, please disregard the missed dose if it’s close to the next dose. Never give your pet a double dose of Clindamycin, as this can be detrimental to their health. If you suspect your pet has had an overdose, contact your veterinarian immediately. Signs of Clindamycin toxicity include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Potential Side Effects

Although Clindamycin is generally safe and effective when given as instructed by your veterinarian, the medication may cause side effects in some animals. Please seek immediate veterinary care if your pet displays any of the following symptoms.

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Allergic reactions

Precautions

Although Clindamycin is safe for use in cats and dogs, it should not be used to treat small animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs. It may also be unsuitable for pregnant or lactating animals. Before giving Clindamycin, please inform your veterinarian if your pet has underlying health issues or allergies to certain medications. Clindamycin may not be suitable for pets with conditions such as liver or kidney disease.

Drug Interactions

Some medications and supplements may interact with Clindamycin. These include opiates, some types of antibiotics, and anti-diarrheal medications such as Loperamide. Before giving Clindamycin, inform your veterinarian if your pet is taking other medications or supplements.
