Epistaxis (nosebleed), is a condition in which bleeding occurs from the nasal cavity. It is common in cats and dogs and can be caused by a number of underlying factors.

Causes of Nosebleeds

Trauma, stress, infection, and foreign bodies in the nasal cavity are some of the most common causes of epistaxis. Other causes include tumors, blood clotting abnormalities, and reactions to certain medications.

Illnesses such as anemia, cancer, and Von Willebrand’s disease have also been linked with nosebleeds in pets. Since there are so many potential causes of the condition, it is important for your pet to be correctly diagnosed and treated.

Symptoms of Nosebleeds

Please visit your veterinarian immediately if your pet displays any of the following symptoms of nosebleeds.

  • Blood or bloody discharge from the nose
  • Frequent snorting
  • Swelling of the nose
  • Pawing or scratching at the nose
  • Loss of appetite
  • Bad breath
  • Lethargy

Diagnosis of Nosebleeds

Your veterinarian will evaluate your pet’s medical history and ask you a series of questions about the onset and severity of their symptoms. They will then perform a complete physical examination to check for trauma, abnormalities of the nose, or other potential causes of nosebleeds.

Identifying the underlying cause of nosebleeds can be challenging, and multiple diagnostic tests may need to be carried out. Routine tests include a complete blood count, blood chemistry profile, and urinalysis. Nasal swabs may also be taken as part of the diagnostic process.

Treatment of Nosebleeds

Treatment of nosebleeds will depend on the severity and underlying cause of the condition. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary to stabilize your pet and treat blood loss. Pets with serious underlying conditions will also require specialized treatment.

Other potential treatments for nosebleeds include antibiotics or antifungal drugs to address the infection, and medications to treat stress and anxiety. Please speak to your veterinarian about appropriate treatment options for your pet.

Prevention of Nosebleeds

Since there are so many potential underlying causes of nosebleeds in pets, the condition can be difficult to prevent. We recommend feeding a complete and balanced diet to support your pet’s overall health. It’s also important to provide mental stimulation to help prevent stress and anxiety. Finally, please schedule regular appointments with your veterinarian so your pet’s health can be continuously monitored.
