Some days, being a pet parent feels a little like being on call 24/7. Everything may seem perfectly fine until suddenly you’re wondering why your puppy hasn’t eaten all day. Or maybe your cat is hiding again, and you can’t tell if it’s because she’s stressed out, mad at you, or actually hurting.
And honestly, trying to figure out what’s urgent and what can wait until tomorrow is a stressful situation for both you and your pet. We don’t want you to end up panic-searching symptoms at midnight, so here’s what to do instead.
When Does a Pet Need Urgent Care?
Most illnesses or injuries that aren’t life-threatening but still don’t feel normal can still be urgent situations. That’s why LazyPaw offers same-day appointments. Urgent visits help us diagnose any health problems so we can treat them before they turn into late-night emergencies. Here are five signs that your pet needs same-day care.
1: Breathing Changes
If your pet is wheezing, breathing faster than usual, or working hard to get a full breath, don’t wait. Respiratory distress is a symptom you should always take seriously.
2: Sudden Changes in Appetite
Skipping one meal isn’t usually a big deal. But a full day without food or water is a sign that something’s wrong. It could be heat stroke, an intestinal blockage, kidney disease, or any number of serious illnesses.
3: Persistent Vomiting or Diarrhea
If your dog or cat can’t keep anything down, that’s a red flag. Puppies, kittens, and senior pets can get dehydrated very quickly, which can make things go downhill faster than you’d expect. An isolated case can happen to any pet, but repeated vomiting or diarrhea—especially with blood—could be a life-threatening situation.
4: Limping or Trouble Moving
A mild limp that disappears after some rest? Keep an eye on it. A limp that sticks around? That’s a same-day visit. Because when your pet is limping, it’s important to catch it early and prevent long-term joint or tendon issues.
5: Sudden Changes in Behavior
You know your pet better than anyone, so trust your gut. Hiding more than usual, acting restless, snapping when touched, or just feeling “off” are all ways your furry friend can tell you that something hurts.
With cats, in particular, stress can disguise itself in many different ways. So if something feels “off”, don’t hesitate to get your four-legged friend checked; it’ll bring peace of mind for both of you.
When It Can Usually Wait
It’s important to note that not every new symptom needs an urgent care visit. Some concerns that can wait until your next visit include:
- Light coughing or sneezing with no other symptoms
- A single instance of vomiting
- Occasional soft stools
- Minor itching or licking
- Small bumps you’ve just noticed
If anything on this list becomes frequent instead of occasional, consider a same-day visit.
How to Know When It’s an Emergency
A lot of people get confused between urgent and emergency care. Urgent issues are things that worry you but aren’t immediately life-threatening. Emergency issues are the ones where you don’t stop to ask questions—you just grab your keys and go.
Head to the ER immediately if your pet has:
- Labored or open-mouth breathing
- Major trauma (being hit by a car, animal attacks, major falls, etc.)
- Uncontrolled bleeding
- Seizures
- Sudden collapse
- Possible poisoning (ASPCA Poison Control: 888-426-4435)
Anything less dramatic, like your dog eating a sock, can often be handled with a same-day appointment at your regular clinic.
