Texas Veterinary Medical Association’s Annual Conference
by Julaine Hunter, DVM
This past weekend LazyPaw Animal Hospitals practice manager, Ms. Kinsey Eliot, participated in the Texas Veterinary Medical Association’s Annual Conference held in College Station on the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine campus. A student focused event kicked off early Saturday, March 1st with a Veterinary Student/Veterinary Medical Professional Social. This get together was an opportunity for students to meet professionals from across the state and the nation to set up summer jobs, internships and externships for the coming year.
Immediately following this event, TAMU veterinary students were given the opportunity to add a new skill to their growing list of accomplishments: interviewing. There is so much to learn in a myriad of species that the curriculum cannot be dedicated to learning, practicing and building upon resume writing and interviewing skills. The vast majority of a student’s veterinary medical school training is devoted to learning what is normal and what is not normal and then on how to try to fix, and in some cases where a cure is not possible, how to manage chronic problems. Because of her expertise in practice management, including applicant assessment, Ms. Eliot’s participation in this annual program was invaluable to fourth year veterinary students interested in conducting preliminary employment interviews all with the next step in mind: getting their first job.
Though not permitted to be present during the active interview process, Elfie was able to practice her growing assistance dog skills by providing comfort and levity participants who found the process somewhat daunting.
